Nandi Hills, also known as Nandidurg or Nandi Betta, is one of the most popular trekking destinations near Bangalore. The hills are located about 60 kilometers from the city, making them an ideal location for day trips and weekend getaways. The place derives its name from the majestic statue of Nandi (the bull), which is situated at the hill’s summit.
The trek to Nandi Hills, although relatively short, offers a delightful adventure to both amateur and experienced trekkers. The hill rises to about 4851 feet above sea level, and the trekking trail stretches around 8 kilometers. This journey includes a steep ascent towards the end, which can be a thrilling challenge for trekking enthusiasts.
One of the main attractions of the Nandi Hill trek is the mesmerizing view of the sunrise from the hilltop. The sight of the sun rising over the expansive landscape, with a blanket of fluffy clouds below, is a sight to behold.
Once you reach the top, apart from the stunning views, there are other attractions to explore. There’s the ancient Yoga Nandeeshwara Temple, which has a beautiful stone carved statue of Nandi. The Bhoga Nandeeshwara temple at the base of the hill is also a noteworthy site, known for its intricate architecture.
Near the summit, you’ll find Tipu’s Drop, a 600-meter-high cliff face. According to local lore, it was the execution point during Tipu Sultan’s reign. There’s also Tipu’s Summer Residence, often called the Tashk-e-Jannat, meaning “Heaven’s Envy”, known for its ornate decorations and stunning garden settings.
For nature enthusiasts, the hill harbors a variety of flora and fauna. You might spot birds like the Nilgiri Woodpigeon, Yellow-throated Bulbul, and other species which are predominantly seen in the region.
