Kaiwara, located in the Chintamani Taluk of the Chikkaballapura district in Karnataka, is a place teeming with historical and mythological significance. It is about 70 kilometers from Bangalore, making it an ideal destination for a day trip.
Steeped in the rich lore of the Mahabharata, Kaiwara was known as ‘Ekachakrapura’ during the epic era. It is believed to be the place where the Pandavas lived during their exile and where Bheema, one of the Pandava brothers, killed the demon Bakasura.
One of the primary attractions in Kaiwara is the Bheemalingeshwara Temple. The temple complex includes three temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, which were built by the Pandavas, as per local beliefs. The oldest of these is said to be installed by Bheema himself, hence the name Bheemalingeshwara.
Kaiwara is also the birthplace of the renowned saint Narayanappa, popularly known as Kaiwara Thatayya. He composed many Keerthanas (devotional songs) in Kannada, and the place he used to meditate, called “Kailasa Giri,” is a significant pilgrimage spot today. Amara Narayanaswamy Temple is a modern edifice built in his memory.
For nature and adventure enthusiasts, Kaiwara offers the Vaikunta hill, an easy trek that offers panoramic views of the surrounding regions. Moreover, there is a stone bed called ‘Bheema Pada’ believed to be used by Bheema, which is another intriguing sight for mythological and historical enthusiasts.
For those interested in ancient Indian literature, the Yogi Nareyana Ashram houses many scriptures and rare works. Additionally, the Dinosaur Park, a recent addition to Kaiwara’s attractions, is a fun place for kids, boasting life-size models of dinosaurs.
Overall, a trip to Kaiwara presents a unique blend of history, mythology, spirituality, and natural beauty. Whether you’re a history buff, a spiritual seeker, or a nature lover, Kaiwara has something for everyone, making it a must-visit destination from Bangalore
